The
Granite City Band Mission Statement:
The Granite City
Adult Community Band is a not-for-profit corporation and its purpose
is furthering civic enjoyment of music through quality concerts,
encouraging youth to become interested in playing an instrument and
enabling former musicians to participate in musical community
functions.
We believe the importance of a musical background is a benefit in
other areas of education too, and is important in fostering growth
through group participation. Health benefits have also been
associated with attending concerts!
Join us for some fun, relax and enjoy the music...AND THANKS FOR
YOUR SUPPORT!
The Granite City Swing Band:
Part of the Granite
City Community Band, the GC Swing band takes the love of music to
another level. For those musicians who like the good old swing
music from the 1940’s to some of the hottest swing charts of today,
the GC Swing band is for you!
Within the band’s
library are many charts from the “Golden Oldies” such as pieces by
Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and man,
many more. Also, the group plays charts written and/or arranged by
some of our area\’s finer arrangers and composers.
This group usually
consists of many of the members of the Granite City Community Band
as well as other fine musicians from the Metro area. The group
normally has sixteen to twenty musicians, which play at many
functions and benefits across the St. Louis Metro Area.
If you love that
good ol’ swing music, then the G.C. Swing band is right for you!
We're open to requests - - email the band librarian.
Practice for GC
Swing immediately follows the concert band practices which are held
every Thursday. GC Swing band rehearsal starts at 8:35 pm sharp, so
bring your horn and have a good time!
More about us:
The Granite City Adult Community Band
began with a desire to fill a void ~~ there was nowhere in Granite
City to play concert band music after high school graduation. A
meeting attended by Louis Meek, Joe Owens, Jack Johnson, and Billie
Strauser in the summer of 1989 started the process. After many
phone calls, newspaper notices and meetings, the first rehearsal was
held on Wednesday, September 16, 1987, in the Granite City High
School Band room. The band will be 20 years old this year!
The Granite City
Band is active year-round sharing their talent and bringing the
sound of live concert band music to Granite City and surrounding
communities. The band likes to encourage, promote, teach and
perform the fine arts.
The band performs
throughout the Granite City area. All of these concerts are FREE,
making an afternoon or evening of live music affordable and
family-friendly. The band performs a wide-ranging repertoire,
including marches, show tunes, popular songs, contemporary
compositions and classical band literature.
The Granite City
Community Band is a not-for-profit corporation that operates solely
through annual contributions and free-will donations taken at our
concerts from friends like you. The money we receive goes to
purchasing equipment, music and programs.
If you would like to support the band in a more formal manner on an
annual basis, please email
President . If you would
like to designate your gift in honor of or in memory of someone,
please note it with an email. Upon receipt of your donation, your
name or corporation will appear under the appropriate category in
subsequent concert programs and on webpage at this site, unless you
wish to remain anonymous.
We thank you for your support and interest in the Granite City
Community Band.
